About
Philly Pen Circle
We meet every month at a clean, well-lighted place near public transit. (generally a pub, cafe, restaurant, we're not big drinkers) We bring fountain pens or rollerballs and things to write on, from index cards to overstuffed Hobonichi or Filofax planners, etc. Sometimes we pass around new pens we just bought, other times we talk about our week or the band we just saw, or compare nerdy ink test pages. Sometimes we write a letter or post card right at the table. We alternate days: Monday one month, Tuesday the next (as some people have classes that keep them from making Mondays or Tuesdays-by alternating, gives a better chance). Meetings always start at 6:30 p.m., and last an hour to 2 hours usually. People often have a dinner/snack at them. The locations are usually near Center City Phila., but we're hoping to range more widely while still staying close to a transit stop. OH, and people often say, "Want to try out this pen?"
Who Should Join
Really still in flux; we've had a PHL Orchestra oboe player, a gene researcher, a lot of artists/writers who do something else for money, a bike courier, a professional meeting organizer who tolerates our flakey Instagram, and all sorts. Hoping to see more calligraphers, maybe, and more Filofax users, since that was the organizer that was invented in Philadelphia.
Best Way To Join
Very low key! Look up our Instagram or FB, or Bluesky -- @phillypencircle for the next few meetup dates/locations. Then show up. No cost. You may have a fountain pen or at least an opinion on your fave roller-ball or planner; but if you don't, no worries. Just ask what you should get and watch the debates start! Some of us have decent ( i.e. more than 10?) pen collections. A (very) few of us have serious (like 100 or more) pen collections; but we'll probably never heard anyone say, "Why yes, my good fellow, I have XXX pens..."
